What is cancer?

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out of control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer but I will be writing on these few ones.

Early dictation of cancer greatly increases the chances for successful treatment. There are two major component of early detection of cancer:

  • Education to promote early diagnosis and screening.
  • Recognizing possible warning signs of cancer and taking prompt action leads to early diagnosis.

 

Finding and treating cancer at an early stage can save lives.

Cancer that is diagnosed at an early stage, when it isn’t too large and hasn’t spread, is more likely to be treated successfully. If cancer spreads, effective treatment becomes more difficult, very costly and generally a person’s chances of surviving are much lower. How early diagnosis can improve survival.

Below is some example of how spotting common cancer early can make a real difference:

Brest cancer

more than 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest stage survive their disease for at least 5 years compared to around 15% for women diagnosed with the most advanced stage of the disease.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer affects only men, men older than 75 accounts for two third of this cancer death and second leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer and second only to skin cancer. Men at 40years should screen for prostate specific antigen to help in early detection and prevention.

Bowel cancer

More than 9 in 10 bowel cancer patients will survive the disease for more than 5 years if diagnosed at the earliest stage.
